WPSU, Central Pennsylvania’s Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and National Public Radio (NPR) affiliate, is looking for a highly motivated Broadcast Engineer to join our team. As part of Penn State University, WPSU reaches 1.9 million viewers and listeners across Central Pennsylvania, bringing quality educational and entertainment content into their homes.

Responsibilities of this position include the following:

  • Working with engineering, IT and production teams to install, maintain and troubleshoot various broadcast and production related systems.
  • Maintaining consistent operational reliability of WPSU’s broadcast and production services.
  • Ensuring compliance with applicable Penn State and industry information technology security standards.
  • Ensuring compliance with applicable FCC, OSHA, and DEP regulations.
  • Establishing and maintaining a preventative maintenance schedule for WPSU’s remote facilities.
  • Providing operational backup for television and radio traffic personnel.
  • Responding to emergency service outages 24/7.

Education and Experience: This position typically requires a Bachelor’s degree or higher plus 1 year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

The candidate should have the following:

  • Experience with television and radio operations.
  • Knowledge in the areas of electrical, mechanical, IT and RF as they relate to television and radio broadcasting and operations.
  • Must demonstrate sound and reliable troubleshooting techniques to solve complex problems.
  • Ability to comprehend technical documentation such as circuit and wiring diagrams.

This position is fully on-site at the WPSU University Park, PA studios.

This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.

Description:

WPSU seeks an Education Program Specialist to assist with education initiatives at the station.  This position will participate in relationship building with entities at Penn State University, partner stations across Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE), and educators across the WPSU coverage area and collaborates with the community outreach and marketing team to plan educational events and programs.  This position will develop, deliver and assess educational programming and professional development that meets the of community, school, and statewide partners and that aligns with the mission of WPSU Penn State, Outreach and the University. This position assists with strategic planning and impact reporting and manages the content, distribution and marketing of PBS LearningMedia assets.

Education and Experience:

Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree or higher plus 4 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A degree in Education, Curriculum and Development, or a related field such as Educational Theory and Policy, Agricultural Extension and Education, Higher Education, Outreach Education, or Community Development preferred. Qualified candidates will be innovative and demonstrate effective communication, team building and leadership skills as well as an appreciation and understanding of public media.

Additional Information: This position is funded for one year with re-funding contingent upon additional support.

Description:

WPSU Penn State is seeking an Assistant Director of Programming & Broadcast Operations to support the Director in providing oversight for the broadcast and media distribution operations of WPSU, in assisting with content distribution across four broadcast channels, three FM channels, streaming and digital services, and serving as a member of the leadership team. WPSU houses the region’s National Public Radio (NPR) and Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) stations and develops programming and education initiatives to raise awareness of important social issues.

Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to assisting the Director to:

● Oversee the day-to-day broadcast and media distribution operations

● Ensure compliance with federal and state laws and regulations, broadcast industry standards, university policies, and safety guidelines

● Oversee and manage program development and production, broadcast engineering and operations, regulatory compliance and reporting

● Manage the FM radio station

● Ensure that public radio and television stations acquire, produce and distribute diverse programming content

● Negotiate contracts for acquisition and distribution of program content

● Provide direct supervision to the broadcast operations and programming staff, the Digital Content Specialist as well as oversight of the news team

● Oversee, develop and administer annual operating budgets

This position requires:

● Strong written and verbal communication skills

● Extensive knowledge of broadcast industry standards, university policies, and federal and state laws and regulations

● Ability to multitask and produce results while adhering to multiple deadlines

● Knowledge of production practices and trends

● Proven track record of developing and maintaining relationships and strategic partnerships

● Knowledge of the public media environment is a plus
